This beautiful garden lies in the splendid setting of the Sitio Litre villa, built in 1730 and one of the oldest buildings in the Canary Islands, right in the heart of Puerto de la Cruz in the north of Tenerife.
With a history spanning 220 years, the Jardín de Orquídeas de Sitio Litre is the oldest garden in the area. It is a large private garden open to the public, boasting a splendid collection of orchids (one of the most important in the whole of Europe).
Many famous people have visited this enchanting spot, including William Wilde (father of Oscar Wilde); the English naturalist painter Marianne North, who stayed at the villa for 2 months and, enraptured by the beauty of this botanical paradise, painted pictures that are true works of art, now on display at Kew Gardens in London (copies of these famous paintings can be seen at the garden); Agatha Christie, who wrote a novel here; and the German botanist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt.
A visit to this enchanting place is highly recommended for a day out with a difference, surrounded by unspoilt nature, far from the stress and routine of everyday life.
