Loro Parque

Founded in 1972, Loro Parque is a huge park covering 135,000 square metres and home to many animal species. It lies in the north of Tenerife, on the outskirts of Puerto de la Cruz. It is one of the best-known parks in the Canary Islands, and inside you can watch many shows featuring all kinds of animals, to the delight of adults and children alike.

At the entrance is the Pueblo Thai, a Thai-themed area where you can admire multicoloured koi carp. Originally conceived as a “kingdom of parrots”, the park has steadily added more animal species over the years, becoming one of the most popular parks of its kind in the Canary Islands.

Around 800 species of parrot, 350 of them endangered, live in the huge area devoted to them (the world’s largest collection of these beautiful birds). Today there are more than 3,000 parrots for visitors to admire (don’t miss the porcelain parrot museum).

Also worth seeing is Planet Penguin, one of the largest penguin enclosures in the world, with its Antarctica hall: a faithful reproduction of the real thing, made up of a peninsula covered with twelve tonnes of snow and surrounded by icy water. Inside Planet Penguin you can see more than 250 penguins.

There are also animals of every kind: tigers, jaguars, gorillas, chimpanzees, flamingos, crocodiles, turtles, pelicans, piranhas, iguanas, seahorses and many more.

Throughout the day the park puts on many shows featuring parrots, sea lions, orcas and dolphins.

Among the attractions for younger children, look out for Kinderlandia, a wonderful world of adventure.
