Cueva del Hermano Pedro

The Cueva del Hermano Pedro cave shrine, with an open-air altar and rows of blue chairs

Cueva del Hermano Pedro (Brother Pedro’s Cave): a cave shrine dedicated to Pedro de San José de Bethencourt, the first saint of the Canary Islands.

It is one of the most important religious sites in the Canary Islands and one of the most visited by pilgrims (an estimated 300,000 visits a year). It lies in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, near El Médano.

Inside the cave, whose walls are covered with holy images left as offerings by the faithful, there is a wooden statue of the saint.

Outside stands an altar carved from stone, where religious services are held.

This sacred place once gave shelter to the saint and his flock on the winter journey to the small village of Vilaflor.

Every year, during the feast of Santo Hermano Pedro in April, hundreds of pilgrims walk the ancient route to pay tribute to him.
