Drago Milenario de Icod

The Drago Milenario de Icod with its umbrella-shaped crown among palms and gardens

Drago Milenario de Icod: a huge native dragon tree, incredibly old – around 1,000 years – and of extraordinary size.

About 18 metres tall, with a trunk circumference of around 20 metres at the base and more than 300 main branches, it was declared a national monument in 1917.

It stands in the park named after it, among native vegetation. The Drago Milenario is not the only specimen: close by, in Plaza Cabrera Mejías, grows its “brother”, the Drago Chico, also known as the Drago de San Antonio.

According to a Guanche legend, the dragon tree can cure any kind of illness. It is the symbol of the town of Icod de los Vinos and appears on the municipality’s official coat of arms.
