Masca is a small village in the municipality of Buenavista del Norte (Canary Islands, Spain). It sits in the Teno massif, at the north-western tip of Tenerife, 750 metres above sea level. The village is tiny, with around 100 inhabitants. Masca was once considered a pirates’ refuge. In July 2007 a huge fire that broke out in the lush vegetation nearby destroyed much of the village, which was later rebuilt.
This wonderful corner of the island is a landscape of deep ravines and cliffs that drop straight into the ocean. The area is famous among keen hikers for the trail that winds through lush vegetation all the way to the cliffs of Los Gigantes (care is advised, especially for less experienced walkers). The hike takes about 3 hours at a gentle pace and is fantastic, with breathtaking views straight over the ocean – a perfect spot for photography lovers. The village’s economy lives off tourism, thanks to the many hikers who come to Masca to walk this now-famous trail: an estimated 1 million visitors a year. As a result, the area has bars and restaurants to cater properly for its many visitors. You can book a guided hike that takes you through the Barranco de Masca towards Los Gigantes, where a boat will carry you on to the nearby harbour.
